Prince Charles' Honeymoon with Princess Diana: The Gentle Way He Had Camilla Around
Prince Charles and Princess Diana had an almost perfect wedding, but their honeymoon and their marriage didn't make the cut. Five years into the marriage, the couple's incompatibility, age difference (of almost 13 years), and cheating scandal sprouted problems for them. This eventually led to the end of their union in 1992. However, what many don’t know is that the problem began right from the couple's honeymoon. Find out what happened during their honeymoon and how Prince Charles’ subtly brought Camilla on his honeymoon with Princess Diana.
PRINCE CHARLES’ RELATIONSHIP WITH CAMILLA
The love between the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall didn't just begin during his marriage to Princess Diana. The Prince had a thing with Camilla even before he met and began dating Princess Diana.
Prince Charles met Camilla through a mutual friend, Lucia Santa Cruz in mid-1971. At the time, her boyfriend Andrew Parker Bowles — who later became Camilla's husband — had left her to date Princess Anne. The Prince and Camilla grew close quickly, and their relationship became serious.
However, things abruptly ended after Charles traveled overseas for military studies in the Royal Navy in early 1973. Nevertheless, the two remained good friends even after Camilla married Andrew. Reportedly, the duo rekindled their romantic relationship in 1980, but Charles revealed that he actually reconnected with Camilla in 1986, after his marriage to Diana had “irretrievably broken down.”
PRINCE CHARLES AND LADY DIANA
16-year-old Diana met the Prince of Wales when he was dating her older sister, Lady Sarah in 1977, at a country weekend during the summer of 1980. The Prince reportedly took an interest in her, while she watched him play polo. Their relationship subsequently progressed when Prince Charles invited her aboard Britannia — a royal yacht for a sailing weekend to Cowes. Then, he brought her along to Balmoral, the Scottish residence owned by the royal family to meet his family. Diana met the Queen, the Queen Mother and the Duke of Edinburgh and was well received by them. They began courting, and when Prince Charles proposed to her on February 6, 1981, she accepted. Lady Diana who was 21 years old at the time, became Princess of Wales when she married the Prince of Wales on 29 July 1981 at St Paul's Cathedral.
THE ROYAL WEDDING
The most-watched royal wedding of all time between Prince Charles and Princess Diana seemed like a perfect fairy tale. The duo got married in 1981 in front of many people, including 28.4 million people who tuned in to watch the wedding ceremony in a live broadcast. The wedding of the couple’s elder son, Prince William, to Kate Middleton took the No. 3 spot while their younger son, Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle, came in at No. 5.
Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s nuptials has been considered the most memorable royal wedding. This is because the world hadn't seen a royal wedding on a large scale as such in a number of years.
According to Reader's Digest, Princess Diana and Prince Charles set off for a 14-day cruise aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia after their wedding. They journeyed to Gibraltar on the south coast of Spain before heading for the Mediterranean. The new couple ended their honeymoon at the royal family’s Balmoral Castle in Scotland. While these honeymoon trips sound fantastic, it was reported that the two had an awful time together.
PRINCE CHARLES’ REACHED OUT TO CAMILLA DURING THE HONEYMOON
Camilla, who is now the Duchess of Cornwall, was in contact with Prince Charles while he was on his honeymoon with Princess Diana. It was revealed that Prince Charles called Camilla daily during the period. Prince Charles’ valet, Stephen Barry, noted in the book, ‘The Diana Chronicles’ by Tina Brown that:
“The Prince simply had to be in constant contact with Camilla, or he couldn’t function properly. If he went without his daily phone call, he would become tetchy and ill-tempered.”
PRINCESS DIANA THINKS HER WEDDING DAY IS THE WORST DAY OF HER LIFE
Although many would give up everything to have such a ‘picture-perfect’ wedding as Princess Diana and Prince Charles,’ Diana later disclosed that her wedding day was “the worst in her life.” Apparently, the feeling was mutual as the Prince didn't like it either; this was revealed by a friend of Prince Charles.
“That first night was nothing special. It was pleasant enough, of course. But she really was painfully naive. Charles had enjoyed women who led him, mastered him, and mothered him. He was used to being served, not required to seduce.”

PRINCE CHARLES WORE THE CUFFLINKS GIFTED TO HIM BY CAMILLA
During the Channel 4 documentary, ‘Diana: In Her Own Words,’ tapes of Princess Diana having a conversation with her speech coach were released. On the recordings, she opened up about the cufflinks Prince Charles wore during their honeymoon.
“On our honeymoon, cufflinks arrive on his wrists. Two C’s entwined like the Chanel ‘C’. Got it. One knew exactly. So I said ‘Camilla gave you those didn’t she?’ He said ‘Yes, so what’s wrong? They’re a present from a friend.’ And boy, did we have a row. Jealousy, total jealousy. And it was such a good idea the two ‘C’s, but it wasn’t that clever.”
PRINCE CHARLES HAD A PHOTO OF CAMILLA
In the book, ‘The Duchess: The Untold Story, ’ the author, Penny Junor, wrote about another unfortunate incident that occurred during their honeymoon. A photo of Camilla fell out of Prince Charles’ diary when he and Princess Diana were busy checking their schedules. Penny Junor wrote in her book, according to People:
“It’s hard to believe that anyone as intelligent and well-read as the Prince of Wales could be so stupid — so utterly incapable of imagining what a new wife might conclude if her husband carried a photograph of his old girlfriend in his diary.”
A fight also broke out between the two on the yacht because the Prince spent a lot of time on a painting. When the Prince finished his painting and stepped away, the Princess angrily thrashed everything because Charles wasn't spending time with her on their honeymoon.
