Prince Charles and Princess Diana's Body Language Suggested They Are Not A Good Match From The Very Beginning
It's no news that Prince Charles and Princess Diana's marriage was far from perfect. The two royals seemed stuck in a loveless union until they eventually separated, and finalized their divorce in August 1996. While Princess Diana's interviews did spill some detailed info about their failed marriage, body language experts reveal that the couple's facial expressions, gestures, postures, and even eye movement showed that they were wrong for each other from the start. Read on to find out what these body language professionals had to say about the couple during their engagement interview and wedding.
THE ENGAGEMENT INTERVIEW
Robin Kermode, a body language expert, analyzed the engagement interview of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. While in an interview with Express, Kermode said:
“It is particularly poignant to revisit the famous engagement interview after 36 years. We shouldn’t forget the scale of the media pressure on these two young people – a pressure that most of us couldn’t possibly handle.”
He also noted:
“If we look at these clips from a body language perspective, we must be aware of the historic lens we watch it through. The manner and style of the interviewer’s questions, and of their responses, seem almost from another world.”
“Some of the clips appear to show a contrast between Charles and Diana. Charles looks assured while Diana often looks sadder when she is listening – her lips and mouth are held together, her eyebrows lifted and her cheeks pushed forward with watery eyes.”
“I think one of the most interesting phrases from Charles was the use of the word ‘business’ when asked about their courtship. He then spends several moments looking down avoiding the camera. His lip corner pulls inwards, and then his mouth is pulled tight and upwards suggesting sadness. We know that big decisions, like red, trigger emotions and sadness and joy can often be mixed together.”
DIANA WAS ON THE VERGE OF CRYING ON HER BIG DAY
Every woman anticipates the day she'll walk down the aisle and be joined with the one she loves. This is one of the reasons why weddings are one of the happiest days for many people. However, for Lady Diana, she was more downhearted than excited on her big day.
Body language expert and author, Judi James, analyzed Charles and Diana's body language on their wedding day. James commented:
“On her first few steps into the cathedral, Diana’s veiled face is wearing the traditional bridal expression of a radiant smile. Then her large eyes start to scan the scene inside the cathedral, and her face does a sudden and very dramatic drop. Her mouth slopes downward, and her eyes fall, and for a moment she looks close to tears.”
“When she lifts her eyes there is even a moment of steeliness bordering on anger. It’s not until her dress designer comes to flounce the veil that she manages a girlish but slightly forced-looking smile in response.”
James didn't fail to mention how Diana's expression quickly changed throughout the event.
“This constant flickering of extremes of expressions could be seen as just a sign of nerves, but there is very little looking at her father for reassurance or the more signature ‘Shy Di’ expressions she was known for.”

DIANA SCANNED THE CROWD FOR CAMILLA ON HER WEDDING DAY
You're probably wondering why there was a drastic change in Diana's expression during the ceremony. It was reported that Diana revealed how she looked for Camilla in the crowd while entering the church on her wedding day. Camilla is the present Duchess of Cornwall whom Prince Charles had an affair with and married in 2005. (Remember we shared on the main reason why Princess Diana and Prince Charles' marriage came to an end).
According to Good Housekeeping, Diana told Andrew Morton, the royal biographer in 1991.
“I knew she was in there, of course. I looked for her, so walking down the aisle, I spotted Camilla, pale gray, veiled pillbox hat, saw it all, her son Tom standing on a chair. To this day you know — vivid memory.”
“Her eyes scour the guests on the way up the aisle, and although there are reflected smiles for some, there are also signals of anxiety and fluctuating emotions that would endorse her claim that she was actually looking for love-rival Camilla.”
CHARLES’ BODY LANGUAGE REVEALED THAT HE WASN'T QUITE HAPPY EITHER
Judi James’ analysis of the Prince of Wales’ body language during his wedding to Diana suggested that he wasn’t as cheerful as a groom should be either. James noted:
“Charles adopted an air of faint sadness as he waited for his bride, with his brows steepled and his eye-gaze distant and reflective. You could see this as an expression of duty and formality, but the camera shows the Queen absolutely beaming at her son, so there was no great pressure on him to look poker-faced.”
“He flashes the ghost of a smile when his bride arrives and then a swift look up and down at her dress with no sign of appreciative or reassuring smiling.”
Regardless of this, Charles and Diana did share positive non-verbal signs during the period of their engagement and wedding. The couple was seen holding hands when they left for their wedding rehearsal. Other times, they were spotted sharing smiles and kissing each other.
