Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Newborn Son Might Be the Lightest Royal Baby to be Born in 10 Years

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have constantly been making big waves in the royal family, but they may have just given birth to the smallest baby throughout the last ten years of royal births.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the royal family of Britain, and fans of the royals were thrilled at the arrival of the royal newborn. The official Sussex Instagram page made the announcement on Monday.

The news followed reports that Markle was in labor at 1:45 p.m. (London time). Against tradition, the couple has chosen to remain private surrounding the birth, but the post gave the public some insight.

Atop a solid navy-colored background, the announcement read:

"It's a BOY! Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to announce the birth of their child."

Details are still coming in

The post, which is found below, included more details in the caption. The healthy newborn was delivered in the early morning of May 6. According to TIME Magazine, the boy was born at precisely 5:26 a.m.

This is Prince Harry and Markle's first child and much of the world has been anticipating his arrival since October 2018. The next step will be to learn his name, which the royal couple hasn't revealed as yet.

The caption also divulged the child's weight before thanking the public:

"Their Royal Highnesses' son weighs 7lbs. 3oz. The Duchess and baby are both healthy and well, and the couple thank members of the public for their shared excitement and support during this very special time in their lives."

The newborn's size is on the lighter end

In comparison, Prince William and Kate Middleton's children were all heavier than the recent addition to the family. Prince George weighed a whopping 8lbs 6oz when he entered the world on July 22, 2013.

The young lad contested the record for the heaviest heir to the throne. His younger sister Princess Charlotte was not far behind, coming in at 8lbs 3 oz. Prince Louis, however, broke his brother's record, weighing in at 8lbs 7oz on April 23, 2018.

The royal girls were quite heavy

Both boys were beaten out by baby Lena, born to Zara and Mike Tindall. The Queen's seventh great-grandchild weighed 9lbs 3oz in June 2018. Peter and Autumn Phillips' daughter Savannah was also in the running at 8lbs 8oz in 2010.

The Tindall family's older daughter Mia was considerably lighter than her sister. Mia weighed in at 7lb 12oz at her 2014 birth, which is much closer to the newest royal baby's weight. William himself weighed only 7lb 1.5oz at his birth in June 1982.

The little one is clearly on the lighter end of the scale despite the many pictures we've seen of Markle's round tummy pre-delivery. Regardless, they couldn't be happier.

Prince Harry is elated

Prince Harry expressed his joy to reporters not long after the delivery, saying:

"It’s been the most amazing experience I can ever possibly imagine. How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension, but we're both absolutely thrilled."

The 34-year-old added:

"It was amazing, absolutely incredible, and as I said, I’m so incredibly proud of my wife. And as every father and parent would ever say, your baby is absolutely amazing, but this little thing is absolutely to die for."

He also said that he and Markle were "still thinking about" the baby's name. Harry's son is seventh in line for the throne, behind Prince Charles, Prince William, his father, and his three cousins, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis.

Outside the Buckingham Palace, the traditional framed announcement was put on display atop a ceremonial easel. Our congratulations go out to Markle, Prince Harry, and the entire royal family.
