How Princess Diana wanted to save marriage with Prince Charles on the day of their divorce

Princess Diana and Prince Charles got wedded in an elegant way. Their union which took place on July 29, 2018, was labeled "wedding of the century.” The wedding was a fairytale affair. Sadly, not all Princes and Princesses get a “happily ever after," which was the case with the former Royal couple. Their marriage ended up being a catastrophe. It was filled with humiliating scandals and extramarital affairs. Things got bad between them, and they decided to end things.

The royal couple informed the public that they were separating in 1992. Four years after the announcement, they were officially divorced and what they reportedly did together on that day is entirely unexpected. Read on to find more on this, and what Princess Diana wanted instead of a divorce and why she couldn't get it.

WHAT DID THEY DO TOGETHER ON THE DAY THEY DIVORCED?

The day that the marriage between Princess Diana and Prince Charles ended, the Royals both did something astonishing. They did something that no one would have expected from them, considering how riotous their wedding was.

According to a Royalty Magazine editor Ingrid Seward, the duo cried together after signing the divorce papers. Seward further disclosed in the documentary ‘The Royal Family At War’ saying:

" Diana did tell me something quite interesting. She said that on the day of the divorce, she and Charles sat down together on the sofa and they both cried. It was this crazy separation by the time the divorce was finalized; they were on much better terms."

Even though they divorced, they were at peace with each other.

PRINCESS DIANA WOULD HAVE PREFERRED A TEMPORARY SEPARATION

The documentary also had claims of the Princess not wanting a divorce.  The documentary said she would have preferred a brief separation. However, because of her explosive tell-all Panorama interview, Queen Elizabeth II sent a letter to Prince Charles and Princess Diana imploring them to get a divorce. A statement from the palace said:

"After considering the present situation, the Queen wrote to both the Prince and Princess earlier this week and gave them her view, supported by the Duke of Edinburgh, that an early divorce is desirable."

The Prince agreed immediately while it took Princess Diana two months to accede. Both of them finalized their divorce in August 1996.

WHAT WAS IN DIANA'S SETTLEMENT?

After the divorce, Princess Diana had to drop the title of Her Royal Highness. However, Queen Elizabeth II permitted her to keep the title Diana, Princess of Wales. Also, as part of her divorce settlement, Princess Diana got to keep most of her jewelry likewise a three-level apartment in Kensington Palace. She still had access to the family's private jets whenever she needed to travel. Princess Diana also got a considerable sum of $22.5 million. Furthermore, an amount of $600,000 salary was granted to her to cater to her private office.Unfortunately, Princess Diana died on August 31, 1997, after a car crash in Paris. Prince Charles later remarried on April 9, 2005. He got married to Camilla Parker Bowles.

WHY DID THE COUPLE GET MARRIED IN THE FIRST PLACE?

The marriage between Prince Charles and Princess Diana was not a happy one. The Princess' admission was that things between them were never good. In a volatile 1995 Panorama interview, she discussed the Prince's extramarital relations and referred to Camilla Parker Bowles as the “third woman” in the marriage. She was quoted saying:

"Well, there were three of us in the marriage, so it was a bit crowded."

The Princess also talked about her sex life or rather the absence of one, with the Prince, and she believed it was because of his mistress. Diana said that there were relations between them "once every three weeks and I kept thinking... And then I followed a pattern; he used to see his lady once every three weeks before we got married."Princess Diana also later had extramarital affairs. Their marriage collapsed after that which led to their divorce. Thinking about all the headache they had in the union, one would think why didn't Prince Charles just marry Camilla instead of Diana. Well, he couldn't and below is the reason why.

WHY PRINCE CHARLES COULDN'T MARRY CAMILLA

Prince Charles met his second wife through a friend in 1971. They immediately connected and they started seeing each other. However, in 1973, Prince Charles had to leave to go overseas with the Royal Navy. It was in this time frame that Camilla made up with her former lover, Andrew Bowles. Andrew proposed to her, and they got wedded the year after. Nonetheless, when Charles came back, they continued to see each other even though she was married at the moment.

The Queen, Queen Elizabeth II got to know of the affair and was reportedly not pleased because Andrew was the Queen Mother's godson. Her Majesty even had to prohibit  Camilla from the palace for a while. Many are of the opinion that if Charles could, he would have married Camilla, but as at then, it wasn't possible. Firstly, she didn't come from a sufficient aristocratic background which did not make for a proper wife for a future king. Also, back then the Royals wanted the next king to get married to a virgin which Camilla was not, but Diana was.

After his divorce with Princess Diana, the Prince continued to see Camilla, but after Diana's death, they tried to keep their relationship low key. Eventually, they had to go public. When Prince Charles decided he wanted to make her his wife, he asked for the Queen's permission, and it was granted. In 2005, Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles tied the knot.
