Meghan Markle's Absence during Donald Trump's Visit Was 'Unacceptable,' According to Piers Morgan
Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan wrote an opinion piece for the Daily Mail on Monday where he slammed the Duchess of Sussex for her lack of presence while the US president was visiting the UK.
Television host, Piers Morgan, 54, expressed his disdain that one Royal wasn’t seen while the Trump’s were in the country. In his piece, Morgan asked: “where was Meghan Markle?”
The host added:
“She’s the only American in the British royal family, and the leader of HER country was here in her adopted country as a guest of Her Majesty the Queen.”
Morgan also noted that Duchess Meghan’s husband, Prince Harry, was also on hand to meet the presidential couple. He complained: “She missed the state banquet, she missed the palace photo-ops, she missed all the D-Day commemoration ceremonies.”
“Instead, Meghan went M.I.A. and stayed back at her lavishly redecorated – at British tax-payer expense - home, Frogmore Cottage in Windsor.”
It was believed the Duchess wasn’t present because she’d just given birth to her first child, Archie Harrison a month ago. However, Morgan felt that Meghan just didn’t want to play her Royal role and fulfill her duties.
The television presenter noted:
“But then, the moment Trump had gone, Meghan suddenly popped up at the Trooping of the Colour, in an open-top carriage, looking in radiant good health and with a permanently beaming grin.”
He shared his theory of her initial absence stating: “So call me suspicious, but I don’t think her absence from Trump’s visit had anything to do with her baby, and everything to do with her dislike of her President.”
Morgan felt Meghan’s behavior was “unacceptable” and “not part of the deal.” The host shared that part of “the behavioral requirements” for a Royal was to “rock up for big royal events.”
He added that this was a big event and Meghan should’ve made sure she attended. Morgan also noted that what made this visit even more special was that “it was to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day” which happened to be quite important “for Britain and America.”
He figured the Duchess chose to stay away “because she was absolutely terrified of being photographed with him (the US president) and looking like she may be enjoying his company - rather than clubbing him over the head with a giant hammer.”
The host continued: “It was like she just couldn’t be bothered about them - such is her antipathy towards Donald Trump.” However, he insisted that Meghan had to play her Royal duty in the future.
He made an example of the Queen who “has hosted all manner of ghastly people on state visits to the UK.” Morgan mentioned Presidents Vladimir Putin and Robert Mugabe and other people who made “Trump look like a choirboy.”
In closing, he said:
“By staying at home, then turning up all bright and cheerful the moment Trump left, she displayed a woefully selfish disregard for royal duty.”
Last Monday, the Queen, Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla, and Harry hosted the presidential couple at Buckingham Palace.
