The Reason Camilla Doesn't Use "Princess Of Wales" Title Might Be Associated With Late Princess Diana

Generally, titles are synonymous to status, when a person has been conferred a new title, it corroborates the position in which the person is placed. When it comes to the British Royal family, after a Prince takes on a wife, a suitable title is presented to the woman. Just as Kate Middleton is referred to as Duchess of Cambridge alongside her husband, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge; so also is Meghan Markle often called Duchess of Sussex, along with her man, Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex.

Conversely, in the case of Prince Charles's wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, it is a different ball game.  She should have had the title of Princess of Wales conferred on her after her marriage to the Prince of Wales in 2005, but that doesn't seem to be the case. The title of Princess of Wales happens to be the next after the position of the Queen in hierarchical order; it is also a very high profiled title. However, Camilla is now often referred to as the Duchess of Cornwall. Do you care to find out why? Well, then carry on, and don't blink while reading this article!

WHY CAMILLA'S TITLE DOESN'T MATCH THAT OF HER HUSBAND, PRINCE CHARLES

Although Camilla is married to the Prince of Wales, it is only logical for her title to be the same as her husband's; instead, she holds the title of Duchess of Cornwall. According to the reasons presented by the royal family, the title of Princess of Wales was formerly associated with Princess Diana, who happened to be the former wife of Prince Charles.

When Princess Diana and Charles split, she was stripped of the Her Royal Highness status, but the title of Princess of Wales was left with her. However, when she died, the title was returned to the crown and left for Prince Charles’ next wife. Now that Camilla is married to Charles, she is traditionally the Princess of Wales, but she prefers to go by the title Duchess of Cornwall.

It is said that Camilla doesn’t want to be called the Princess of Wales because of its unique bond with the deceased princess. While we are not sure why she chose such; It could have been solely Camilla’s decision to forfeit the title. However, due to the peculiarities in how Camilla settled with her husband, we can't help but wonder if the Queen has a role to play in all of it.

THE QUEEN’S TULMUTOUS RELATIONSHIP WITH CAMILLA

The relationship between Queen Elizabeth and Camilla might have been frosty in the beginning, but did it have any long-lasting significance on the title of Princess of Wales? Even though the Queen did not approve of Camilla, whom she once described as a ‘wicked woman,’ according to CheatSheet, Queen Elizabeth still supported the marriage between Prince Charles and Camilla Parker in 2005.

The Queen considered her son's happiness a priority to whatever she felt towards the mistress-turned-wife, and she let the duo get on with their relationship by giving them her blessings. However, this did not stop the Queen from trying to disassociate herself from her new daughter-in-law. At the wedding ceremony of Prince Charles and Camilla, the Queen paid no form of attention to the bride, and it must have surely hurt so bad!

Sadly, that was not all. In the course of the reception, she purposely excluded Camilla's name from the reception speech. Oh dear! Whether or not the Queen showed off her distaste for Camilla, it in no way affected her relationship with Prince Charles, as the duo seem to be doing good and waxing stronger, with a record of decades of togetherness.

THE QUEEN WAS ON TO CAMILLA EVEN BEFORE SHE TIED THE KNOT WITH PRINCE CHARLES

Camilla's mother-in-law has never had a soft spot for her because she was somehow responsible for the split between Princess Diana and Prince Charles. The Queen mentioned how she "didn't want to have anything to do with her,"  one time, so it didn't come as a surprise when Her Majesty banned Camilla from attending Royal gatherings at Buckingham Palace. She further went as far as yanking her name off the party guest list.

Another notable moment of exclusion for the Duchess of Cornwall was the burial ceremony of Prince Charles grandmother, the Queen Mother. This time, however, the Queen changed her mind about excluding Camilla from the event. Camilla was once married to the Queen Mother’s godson, Andrew Parker-Bowles, so why keep her away?

DID THE FROSTY RELATIONSHIP WITH THE QUEEN INFLUENCE CAMILLA PARKER BOWLES’ TITLE?

With a record of not being able to stand her daughter-in-law, it is expected that the Queen may have had an active role in not giving the title of Princess of Wales to Camilla, but sources posit that the decision is not entirely on the Queen, but also on the recipient. This is not to say that the Queen may not have influenced the decision, but then again, the Queen cuts across as a woman of poise and tries to avoid drama at all cost.

Over the years, the Queen appears to have buried the hatchet, so even if she had a hand in withholding the title from Camilla, it was not born out of sheer hatred or bad blood. Since the Queen reeks of elegance, composure and zero tolerance for drama, one can rightly say that if the Monarch ever considered not releasing the title, it will be due to the thought of the backlash from the public.
